Education reform has taken the city by storm over the past two decades, making it one of the most sought-after jobs among Shanghai’s elite.
The city has seen a dramatic rise in high-school graduates, which has fed demand for an increasing number of primary and secondary schools, with an increase in competition for admission into secondary schools, said Li Qinglong, a senior official at the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education.
But the city’s secondary schools, with 3,700 public and private schools, can only accept 300,000 students each year, he said.
“The pressure to educate children is huge,”
The influx of students into the city’s schools and the city’s booming economy has contributed to the challenges, he said.
Each day, over 1 million mainland Chinese students arrive at and depart from Shanghai’s six major airports, and 1.2 million students in Shanghai take a subway to and from school, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education.
The commission’s statistics show Shanghai has one primary school for every 11,400 students, as well as one high school for every 9,700 students. The city has 1,680 high schools and 170,000 primary schools.
“Increasing enrollment is a problem,” Li said.
The challenges are so severe that some schools have started charging fees to students, though there have been no reports of authorities raiding private schools.
